Videos are the biggest files on most phones. When storage fills up, downloads fail, the camera stops and the phone slows down. These steps free up space safely — starting with the quickest wins.
1. See what's actually using space
- Android: Settings → Storage shows space by category. Files by Google → Clean lists large files, duplicates and junk.
- iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage lists apps by size and gives suggestions.
Spend two minutes here first — you'll often find one app or one folder taking up gigabytes.
2. Clear out your Downloads folder
Downloads pile up silently: old videos, PDFs, installers. Open Files → Downloads, sort by size, and delete what you no longer need. On iPhone, check Files → Downloads too — Safari downloads live there, not in Photos. (Can't find it? Where do downloaded files go?)
3. Deal with WhatsApp and Telegram media
Group chats quietly store every forwarded video. In WhatsApp, go to Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage to see the biggest chats and files, and delete in bulk. Turn off auto-download for videos on mobile data while you're there. Telegram has a similar option under Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage, including automatic cache clearing.
4. Clear app caches (Android)
Streaming and social apps cache a lot of data. In Settings → Apps, open a big app and tap Storage → Clear cache. This doesn't delete your account or settings — the app simply re-downloads what it needs. Avoid Clear data unless you're happy to log in again.
5. Offload apps you rarely use (iPhone)
Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Offload Unused Apps removes apps you haven't used for a while but keeps their data, so they come back exactly as they were when you reinstall. You can also offload a single app from its page in the same list.
6. Back up photos and videos — carefully
Cloud backup lets you keep your camera roll without keeping every file on the phone.
- Google Photos: after confirming backup is complete, Free up space removes the device copies of backed-up items.
- iCloud Photos: turn on Optimize iPhone Storage to keep smaller versions on the phone and full versions in iCloud.
Always check that backup has finished before deleting anything, and remember that cloud storage beyond the free tier usually costs money.
7. Move videos off the phone
- Copy them to a computer with a USB cable.
- Use a USB-C flash drive or an external SSD — most modern phones can copy to them directly from the Files app.
- If your Android phone has a microSD slot, move videos there and set it as the default for downloads.
8. Download smarter
Choose 720p instead of 1080p or 4K for videos you'll only watch on your phone — it looks nearly the same and uses about half the space. Choose audio only when you just want the sound. Video quality explained has a size table.
What not to do
- Don't install "cleaner" or "booster" apps that promise miracles — the built-in tools above do the job without ads or permissions.
- Don't delete folders you don't recognise in system storage.
- Don't delete originals until you've confirmed a backup copy opens.
