360p, 720p, 1080p, 4K — Which Video Quality Should You Pick?

What the numbers mean, how much space they take, and the right choice for each screen.

The numbers in a list like "360p · 720p · 1080p · 2160p" describe how many lines of pixels a video has from top to bottom. More lines means more detail — and a bigger file. Choosing well saves storage, mobile data and time.

What the numbers mean

Vertical videos (Reels, TikToks) are described the same way by their shorter side, so a 1080×1920 vertical video is "1080p".

How much space does each take?

File size depends on how the platform compressed the video, but these are realistic averages for one minute of typical social media video:

So a 30-second 1080p Reel is roughly 10 MB, while a 10-minute 4K video can be over a gigabyte. Zovan shows the size of each option when it's known, so you can decide before downloading.

Which quality for which screen

"Best / Original" — what it means

Choosing Best / Original asks for the highest quality the platform has for that video. It can never be better than what the creator uploaded: a video recorded in 720p won't become 1080p, and platforms compress everything they store. If a creator uploaded in 4K and the platform kept it, Best / Original gets you 4K.

Frame rate: the other number

Sometimes you'll see "60" after the resolution (1080p60). That's frames per second. 60 fps makes fast motion — gaming, sports — look smoother, but makes the file bigger. For talking, cooking and most social content, 30 fps is all you need.

Why does my downloaded video look worse than in the app?

Usually because a lower resolution was chosen, or because the original upload was low quality. Apps also sharpen and upscale on screen. Download the highest option available and compare on the same device.
