How video works on Bluesky
Bluesky added video in 2024, and videos are streamed in small pieces at a few different qualities, like most modern platforms. Zovan collects the pieces and gives you one normal MP4 file that plays anywhere.
What you can download
- Videos in public posts from any account.
- Videos in replies and quote posts, as long as you copy the link of the post that contains the video.
Images in Bluesky posts aren't videos, so for those a long-press and Save image in the app is the easiest way. Posts from accounts that limit visibility to logged-in users can't be fetched.
Copy the right post
If a post quotes another post that contains the video, open the quoted post first and copy its link. Zovan looks for the video in the exact post you paste.
Respect people's posts
Bluesky is built around people controlling their own content. Saving a video to watch later is fine; reposting someone else's video elsewhere without credit isn't. Link back to the original post when you share.
Downloading on a computer
On Windows, Mac or Linux the steps are the same: open the post on bsky.app in your browser, copy the address from the address bar, paste it into Zovan and press Fetch. Files go to your Downloads folder — press Ctrl+J (Windows/Linux) or ⌘+Shift+J (Mac) in Chrome or Edge to see them. Any modern player opens the MP4; if one doesn't, the free VLC player plays everything.
Why isn't there a "Save video" button on Bluesky?
Bluesky's apps focus on posting and browsing, and they don't offer an official download button for videos. That keeps the experience simple, but it means there's no built-in way to keep a clip for offline viewing. A downloader that works from the public post link fills that gap without needing your account.
Video length and quality
Bluesky videos are generally short — up to a few minutes — and are offered at a couple of resolutions. Best / Original gives the sharpest version; a lower option keeps the file small for sharing over messaging apps.
