Reddit Video Has No Sound? Here's Why — and the Fix

Reddit keeps the picture and the sound in two separate files. Here's how to get them back together.

You save a funny clip from Reddit, open it later, and… silence. It's one of the most common Reddit complaints, and it isn't your phone or your speakers. It's how Reddit stores video.

Why it happens

When someone uploads a video to Reddit, Reddit doesn't keep one file. It splits it into a video-only track and an audio-only track, each in several qualities. Reddit's player downloads the right pieces and plays them together, so on Reddit everything sounds normal.

Most simple "save video" methods — a right-click, a screen-saving browser trick, many browser extensions — grab only the first file they find: the video track. That's why you end up with pictures and no sound.

This technique has a name, adaptive streaming (DASH), and big platforms use it because it lets the player switch quality smoothly as your connection changes. It's great for watching, but awkward for saving.

The fix: download both tracks and join them

To get a normal video with sound you need to download the video track and the audio track and merge them into one MP4. That's what the Zovan Reddit downloader does on its server:

  1. Copy the Reddit post link (Share → Copy link).
  2. Paste it into Zovan and press Fetch.
  3. Choose a quality. Zovan downloads the matching video and audio tracks, joins them with no quality loss, and gives you one MP4.

Merging doesn't re-encode the video, so there's no extra compression — the result is exactly what Reddit stores, just in one file.

Some Reddit videos really have no sound

If a clip is silent even on Reddit, the uploader removed the audio or the clip is a GIF-style post. Those are stored as short silent videos, and there's no audio to restore. A quick check: play the post on Reddit with your volume up. If there's no speaker icon on the player, it never had sound.

Already have a silent file?

You can't add the sound back to a file that doesn't contain it. Delete the silent copy and download it again with a tool that merges audio, like Zovan.

What about videos linked from other sites?

Lots of Reddit posts just link to another site. If the video is hosted on Streamable, Imgur or similar, it lives there — not on Reddit. Open the link and use the original site. (Zovan doesn't support YouTube.)

Summary

Crossposts and silent previews

Crossposts point back to the original Reddit post. If a crosspost gives you trouble, open the original post and copy its link. And remember that Reddit's feed preview starts videos muted — tap the speaker icon on Reddit to check whether a clip really has sound before downloading.
